Learn about the different ‘flavours’ of energy associated with each of the 64 Human Design gates and 36 channels, and how they may influence your aura and design.
Understanding Human Design Gates
One of the reasons I started this website is because there are elements of the Human Design system, devised by Ra Uru Hu, which are so esoteric that finding clear information about each important aspect can prove difficult.
We may earn a small commission from the affiliate links in this post, at no extra cost to you.
The main elements of Human Design include (and I will over time write about each of these in detail):
- Neutrino influence and Magnetic Monopole
- Energy centers
- Gates and Channels
- Planets
- Human Design types (Manifestor, Generator, Manifesting Generator, Projector, Reflector.)
- Profiles and Profile Lines
- Inner and Outer Authority (Emotional authority, Sacral, Splenic, Ego, G center, Environmental, Lunar.)
- Strategy and Aura
- Incarnation Cross
- (False) Not-Self Theme and Signature
- Arrows and variables
Gates in Human Design seemed to be one of those areas which are not clearly explained, and with that in mind I wanted to create a guide that can help anyone new to the concept easily understand and comprehend this important feature of the philosophy.
We can learn to harness our potential by living in alignment with our Human Design type.
What Are Gates in Human Design?
Gates are different energy entry and exit points between the Human Design energy centers (the geometric shapes shown on a BodyGraph).
Human Design is based on the idea that we are each imprinted with the energy of the location, and birth date and birth time. And with a chart reading of the information represented in our unique Human Design BodyGraph – with our activated gates being key to the concept – we can learn to harness our potential by living in alignment with our Human Design type.
Everybody has a maximum of 26 activated gates out of the total of 64, though it’s common to have more than one activation in the same gate.
This maximum comes from the 13 celestial bodies (known as planets) in our conscious personality and unconscious design profile lines shown on each side of your unique chart (more on this later).
This adds further nuance in terms of activated gates.
Human Design is based on several different ancient traditions, including numerology and the I-Ching system. The Rave Mandala of the Human Design System, shows a depiction of how each different philosophy combines to create a personalised Rave Bodygraph, based on individual birth info.
The end result is a synthesis of a natal chart or astrological birth chart, showing a diagram of the energy centers as the focal point, with the hexagrams around the outside.
There are 64 gates in Human Design (each with 6 lines) and 64 Gene Keys, both of which are based on the 64 hexagrams within the I-Ching system; we also have 64 codons in our DNA. Each specific gate relates to its corresponding hexagram, and they’re also said to be linked with a specific codon.
Each Human Design gate also has 6 lines, which adds further nuance in terms of activated gates.
Naturally, this opens many more questions than it answers(!) so let’s quickly go over hexagrams and I-Ching before moving on to a more detailed look at gates themselves.
I Ching Hexagrams in Human Design
In the context of Human Design, hexagrams are displayed around the outside of the Rave Mandala.
The I-Ching is an ancient Chinese manual of divination, based on eight symbolic trigrams and sixty-four hexagrams, interpreted in terms of the principles of yin and yang.
A hexagram is made up of six horizontal lines (hex means six), and the lines of the hexagram are either broken (yin), or solid (yang).
In the context of Human Design, hexagrams are displayed around the outside of the Rave Mandala, and their structure is taken from the data used to calculate a personalised BodyGraph, which is also known as the profile.
Gates which remain white are undefined and are a vulnerability in your character.
This all sounds very complex, but essentially, it’s the same information displayed in different ways.
How Do Gates Work in Human Design?
Your Human Design profile is an overview of activated (coloured red and/or black) gates in your personal chart. It’s determined according to your birth data and where the planets were positioned in relation to each gate and its six lines, both at the time of your birth and 88 days prior.
Each gate represents a specific potential trait or characteristic, which when defined is activated. As with open centers, gates which remain white are undefined and are a vulnerability in your character.
On your personal Human Design chart this information is displayed in a column of red numbers on the left, and black numbers on the right. This information is sometimes also overlaid on a mandala to create the wheel with planets and hexagrams around the outside, as shown above in the blank rave mandala.
Planets in Human Design
The sun/earth of the design are opposite each other on the Rave Mandala and activate the same line in opposite hexagrams.
Working from the top to the bottom of the columns, the planetary glyphs represent:
- Sun – expression of the personality / purpose / power / vitality / leadership / the Ego
- Earth – grounding / balance / fertility / evolution / the Root
- North Node – future direction / environment
- South Node – past direction / environment
- Moon – drive / instinct / emotional needs / change / the Body
- Mercury – awareness / communication / intelligence / the Mind
- Venus – values / relationships / art
- Mars – energy / desire / aggression / action / courage
- Jupiter – opportunity / material matters
- Saturn – discipline / focus / limitations / restraint / pain
- Uranus – revolution / innovation / individuality / instability
- Neptune – intuition / illusion / imagination / psychic phenomena
- Pluto – regeneration / renewal / truth / compulsion / the Unconscious
In Human Design, these columns of numbers are known as profile lines, because they come from the lines of each gate. You’ll see that each one has a number between 1 and 64 (the gate), followed by a period, and a number 1 to 6 (the line of that gate).
This is also where your profile number is taken from: the second number after the decimal at the top of each line. The first number we take is the Personality sun, with the Design sun second; so in the above example, the profile is 2/4.
Note: Your two binaries, the sun/earth of the personality and the sun/earth of the design are opposite each other on the Rave Mandala and activate the same line in opposite hexagrams.
The different colours on each side of the BodyGraph denote different elements of characteristics. The red numbers on the left are unconscious gates, representing the body and known as ‘design’, and the black numbers on the right are conscious gates, representing the mind and known as ‘personality’.

Conscious Gates
These gates are based on the actual time you were born and comprise conscious traits you may consciously recognise in yourself.
Unconscious Gates
Unconscious gates were imprinted 88 days before the moment of your birth and comprise characteristics you may not recognise in yourself.
The Channels Between Gates
Finally, before we come to the various overviews of each gate, it’s worth understanding what channels are in Human Design.
Defined channels denote consistent or reliable natural gifts.
The connection between two gates is called a channel. When gates are activated at either end of a channel, this creates what’s known as definition, or a defined gate, and is illustrated in colour on your BodyGraph.
A defined channel can be thought of as a line of communication between the two adjoining energy centers at either end. Each channel is characterised by a specific theme or gift, and having a defined channel on your BodyGraph brings emphasis to that trait in your chart.
In the same way that a defined center indicates a reliable and consistent energy type, defined channels denote consistent or reliable natural gifts (likewise undefined centers and channels both represent vulnerabilities).

The surge of energy to get things started. Gate 60 thrives within clear boundaries, using creativity to transcend challenges.
Gate 61 – Mystery / Inner Truth

Knowledge is experienced intellectually, while wisdom is a combination of knowledge and knowingness physically experienced in the body.
Can become overwhelmed with existential thoughts.
Gate 62 – Detail / Organisation

I hope this information helps you when reading your own chart.
What Are Channels in Human Design?
Channels relate to one of the basic principles of Human Design reading.
There are 36 different channels in Human Design.
As mentioned above, a channel connects two different centers, which may be defined or undefined. The numbers in each center are gates, which stretch halfway across a channel, and these may be defined or undefined.
Channels can either be black, red, striped black / red, or white. It’s also possible for only part of a channel to be coloured, with the remaining half open (white).
- Black represents conscious traits in yourself which you’re aware of.
- Red represents unconscious traits which others recognise in you.
- Striped represents those traits which you sometimes recognise in yourself but don’t consider to be consistent.
- White represents an undefined channel which is vulnerable to the manifestation of the false self.
Individual channels represent a specific theme or fundamental aspect of experiencing life as a human being.
There are 36 different channels in Human Design, and they can be split into three frequency categories, known as circuitry or circuit groups, which can also be further divided into sub-circuits.
Four channels are not included in any circuit, known as the integration channels.
Individual channels represent a specific theme or fundamental and essential aspect of experiencing life as a human being, within the framework of Human Design.
Just as undefined energy hubs have white centers, white channels are also undefined. If you have a defined (coloured) or activated channel, it indicates that you have consistent and reliable access to that theme, function, or gift.
The life force energy of each channel establishes each aura type’s process for making correct decisions.
Gates reach half way across a channel, so when only half a channel is defined, it actually relates to one gate being defined and the other open. The activated gate is known as a hanging gate.
Taken within the context of the gates it connects and which elements are defined, the life force energy of each channel establishes each energy or aura type’s process for making a correct decision.

As I’ve covered in more detail in other posts, despite the fascinating New Age philosophy, there is no evidence that any aspect of Human Design holds any validity, neither as a whole nor in terms of its various elements.

Hello Kate
An Astrologer and new to Human design. A mental projector according to a friend who has peaked my interest in H D.
Your website is my first foray into a begining to understanding H D. Thank you.
Your ‘leave a reply’ panel does not give me any indication that my first send was sucessful.
Hi William,
Thanks for reaching out, I hope you’re enjoying the content!
Sorry about that, I can appreciate why that’s frustrating for you. I have to set comments to be approved since I receive so much spam (as all sites do). Unfortunately I’m not sure there’s an easy way around it.
Thanks,
Kate
