Manifestation mantras are hugely popular in the Law of Attraction community. Learn about how to use them effectively and the science behind their power.
What Are Manifestation Mantras?

Manifestation mantras are melodic words, phrases, or sounds designed to be chanted, especially during meditation.
The simplest mantra you’re likely to have heard is the ‘om’ sound, considered the first sound which originated on earth and associated with the third eye. When an ‘om’ tone is produced, it reverberates around the body which is said to calm the body and mind.
Of course, Law of Attraction mantras are made up of short positive phrases rather than single powerful sounds, which may leave you wondering how they differ from spiritual affirmations.
Let’s take a look…
Mantras vs Affirmations – What’s the Difference?
The idea is to challenge and interrupt self-sabotaging behaviours, and encourage beliefs and actions which support desirable outcomes.
So what’s the difference between mantras and affirmations? While the two terms are often used interchangeably, they have distinct origins and applications:
Affirmations
Affirmations are short positive statements, designed to encourage a can-do attitude. The father of positive affirmations is considered by many to be psychologist and pharmacist, Émile Coué who, in the early 20th century, pioneered the method within the context of positive psychology.
The idea behind affirmations is to rewire negative thought patterns and beliefs, challenge and interrupt self-sabotaging behaviours, and encourage beliefs and actions which support desirable outcomes.
Mantras
Chanting mantras as part of the manifestation process is a powerful tool.
Mantras are thousands of years old with their traditions rooted in Eastern philosophy.
The framework of mantras tends to be less specific than that of affirmations, with the focus on obtaining abstract or intangible concepts such as unconditional love, success, peace, and enlightenment.
With this in mind, let’s take a look at the benefit and power of mantras for manifesting.
What Are the Benefits of Manifestation Mantras?
In Law of Attraction circles, chanting mantras as part of the manifestation process is a powerful tool which can:
- Focus attention
- Cultivate positive mindset
- Promote intention
- Elevate thought
- Stimulate meridian points
- Activate the pituitary gland to release healing hormones
- Open your chakras (energy centres)
- Release negative emotions
- Impact our vibrational frequency
- Better align with our desires
Manifestation mantras harness the energy of the universe and attract the things we desire into our physical reality.
According to some sources mantras can also influence our habits. How? The following quote is an excellent explanation!
Watch your thoughts, they become your words; watch your words, they become your actions; watch your actions, they become your habits; watch your habits, they become your character; watch your character, it becomes your destiny.
Lao Tzu
In other words, using mantras within the context of LoA is supposed to positively rewire thought processes, ultimately impacting our actions, habits, and outcomes.
Taking into account this last element of mantras in the context of Law of Attraction and manifesting, there’s a definite overlap with the principles involved in affirmations (more on this later).

Now let’s take a look at the psychology and biology behind manifestation mantras…
The Psychology Behind Manifestation Mantras
Mantras in the context of Law of Attraction seem to sort of straddle and imitate both concepts, while belonging to neither.
There are quite a few things to unpick here!
Firstly, let’s go back over the differences between mantras and affirmations. Depending on the source you look at, they’re said to be either subtly different, or wildly so. My research leaves me with an interesting observation…
(Traditional) mantras and affirmations are separated by psychology.
The mantras conceived thousands of years ago are not underpinned by science; they’re about profound spirituality and rituals. The foundations of affirmations on the other hand are in psychotherapy.
What’s fascinating is that mantras in the context of Law of Attraction seem to sort of straddle and imitate both concepts, while belonging to neither:
They borrow the name of traditional mantras, yet the principle idea behind them is manifestation, as opposed to spirituality.
The spirituality involved in manifestation mantras applies only so far as its contribution to and benefit for manifesting: the purpose of practicing these mantras is to manifest, and in this sense the purity of the important part – the sacred spiritual element – is lost.
When we compare a contemporary seemingly magic mantra to an affirmation, there’s a problem here too. Properly constructed affirmations follow a specific formula in order to be successful, and manifestation mantras veer away from this blueprint.
Ultimately, affirmations are the science-backed way to go.
Successful affirmations need to be specific, yet manifesting mantras are designed to be vague. They also need to be inherently true – and again, these mantras miss the mark.
If you noted the asterisked 4th and 5th mantras of each category above, you’ll see these are the ones which are inherently untrue. In fact, while the rest of the examples on this page are unlikely to be harmful, none of them are particularly specific either.
Ultimately, as I’ve said before, if you’re interested in the concept of manifesting, affirmations are the science-backed way to go.
The Science Behind Manifestation Mantras
Moving on from the psychology to the biological science around mantras, it’s suggested that chanting stimulates the thalamus, hypothalamus, and pituitary gland.
This likely stems from two separate areas of medicine, one being scientific and the other being traditional Chinese medicine.
There are flaws in the overarching narrative.
According to traditional Chinese medicine, there are meridian points or channels located in our bodies through which life energy, known as ‘qi’, flows. These meridians are said to be activated via acupressure, and this is where the concept of mantras similarly stimulating systems of the body originates from.
Anatomically, the tongue organ has an autocrine / paracrine mechanism within the body system, and one line of thought suggests it’s also an extension of the enteric system.

The theory is that chanting causes the tongue to press against specific meridian points on the soft palate, creating the same effect as acupressure.
In their book, Trick or Treatment? Alternative Medicine on Trial, scientists Simon Singh and Edzard Ernst state there is no evidence supporting the existence of meridians.
However… A review of the book finds some flaws in the overarching narrative (note, the fact remains that evidence for meridians is missing).
Essentially, the placebo effect is dismissed by Singh and Ernst – but perhaps that’s a little shortsighted – it’s powerful in it own right.
What is the Most Powerful Manifestation Mantra?
This is your personal power, of which you are in full control!
Keeping in mind all of the science and psychology around manifestations, I created the following mantra as an excellent reminder to myself to be accountable for my own happiness:
I can change my experience of life by changing my attitude to life.
Manifesting & Human Design
Choosing to focus on the responsibility you have for your own successes, by taking practical steps towards a goal or by reevaluating how you define success is the only practice suggestion I can in good conscience recommend.
A positive attitude has the potential to profoundly influence your life if you let it. This is your personal power, of which you are in full control!

What is a positive mantra?
Mantras are phrases, sounds, or a single word often used to aid focus in meditation practice. They’re also often thought to hold a vibrational frequency which can be harnessed for manifestation purposes.
What is a spiritual mantra?
A spiritual mantra typically refers to traditional mantras in Hinduism or Buddhism. They’re made up of simple words or phrases with deep spiritual and/or mystical ties and are usually chanted a number of times during rituals.
Where do manifestation mantras originate from?
Associated with Hiduism, Buddhism, Jainism, and Sikhism, the structure, philosophy, and importance of mantras is varied, and thousands of years old. But one thing each tradition has in common is its link with spirituality.
The earliest mantras were composed in Vedic Sanskrit in India, and are considered in some cases to be sacred.
How do I choose a mantra?
Use your intuition, the important thing to keep in mind is that your choice should be governed by the outcome you seek.
If you’re looking for an authentic way to achieve your goals, I strongly recommend affirmations as an alternative to manifestation mantras.
