Open, Defined, & Undefined Identity G Center in Human Design

Everything you need to know about the G center in Human Design, and how it can behave and influence energy.

What is the G Center in Human Design?

There are 9 energy centers in the Human Design system developed by Ra Uru Hu. They consist of two pressure centers, three awareness centers, a manifestation center, an identity center, and four motor centers:

  • Head center (pressure center)
  • Ajna center (awareness center)
  • Throat center (manifestation center)
  • G center (identity center)
  • Heart / Ego center (motor center)
  • Spleen center (awareness center)
  • Emotional Solar Plexus center (awareness and motor center)
  • Sacral center (motor center)
  • Root center (pressure and motor center)

The G center is the diamond-shaped center which sits beneath the sternum.

The origin of these 9 energy centers is the Hindu Brahaman Chakra system. If you’re familiar with it, you’ll notice that in Human Design, there are two additional centers.

This comes from splitting the Heart chakra in two to also include the G Center, and splitting the Solar Plexus in two to also include the Splenic center.

The G center is the diamond-shaped center which sits beneath the sternum (diagram below) and is the center for self-identity, love, and sense of direction in life. Also known as the Identity center, it’s associated with the liver and the blood. The Magnetic Monopole (seat of the soul) resides here.

What Percentage of People Have an Undefined G-Center?

The G center is undefined or completely open in around 43% of the population. For the other 57% of the population, the G center is defined.

Defined, undefined, open Identity G center, Human Design

Individuals with a defined Identity G center have access to a source of consistent energy relating to love, purpose, and sense of identity.

Those with an open or undefined G centre on the other hand absorb, amplify, and reflect the energy of anyone around them with a defined G center (a bit like a Reflector). They are also influenced by the energy of different environments and surroundings.

Let’s take a deeper dive into what it means to have a defined or undefined Identity center…

Defined G / Self Center

Consistent energy emanating from a defined G center represents a fixed identity and a consistent sense of self.

If you are deeply connected to the energy of your defined G center, you will have a natural flair for bringing comfort to those who feel lost.

In other words, individuals with this center defined tend to be secure and at peace with who they are. They experience a sense of purpose and are confident in their life path, whether they know where they’re headed or simply have faith that they’re travelling in the right direction.

Your natural love of self means that any insecurity you experience comes not from self-doubt in who you are, but whether others can appreciate and accept you exactly as you are.

If you are subject to conditioning, it tends to manifest in this center as a feeling that you may be too much, too intense, or too something for others.

If your Identity center is defined and you are deeply connected to its energy, ie. resistant to conditioning, you will also have a natural flair for bringing comfort to those who feel lost or adrift.

Having a defined G center means anyone in your orbit with an undefined or open G-center will be influenced by your energy.

Note also that these relationships will amplify and reflect your energy back to you; it’s therefore vital for your own wellbeing that you are comfortably in alignment with your values and sense of self.

Undefined G Center

An undefined G-centre may manifest as self-doubt or the feeling of not yet having found true purpose in life.

However, it’s important for these individuals to recognise that it can also be interpreted as a great gift to have an open or undefined G.

Sampling different people’s energies provides you with the ability to effectively guide others.

Having an undefined or open Identity center means you are hugely adaptable, and this is a valuable strength. The propensity for such adaptability is what can drive you to question so much about yourself. But it’s simply a case of reframing.

This trait enables you to step into different roles with great fluidity and without being defined by them. Sampling different people’s identities and energies to suit yourself and your environment provides you with the ability to effectively guide others with great wisdom.

While you may experience a nagging sense of needing to find love and direction (the not-self theme of this center), the reality is that if you embrace your adaptability and resist conditioning, you can be a great leader.

Surrounding yourself with the right people and being in the right place / right environment at the right time will guide you to the right opportunities.

Open G Center

An open center has no definition and no activated gates.

Much of the above information applies here too, but it’s important to note that while the terms ‘undefined’ and ‘open’ are often used interchangeably within Human Design, there is in fact a difference between the two concepts.

Both open and undefined centers are white on a body graph. The difference between the two is whether there are any gate activations within the center.

Our open centers allow us to feel the energy of our fellow human beings, leading to great empathy.

An open center has no definition and no activated gates (an undefined center on the other hand is white, but one or more of its gates will be activated, or coloured in black or red).

While the activated gates of an undefined center act like buffers, open Human Design centers have no filter. This can be both a blessing and a curse…

Our open centers allow us to pick up and feel the energy of fellow human beings as though it were our own, leading to great empathy (blessing).

For those with an open G center, it’s essential to be mindful of the company you keep.

On the other hand, we can be subject to outside influence from energy which does not belong to us to such a degree that we become conditioned and act on it (curse).

So what’s the answer? It’s vital to be aware of where we’re vulnerable to conditioning so that we can be mindful to experience the energy of others – but ultimately turn inward for wisdom and inner guidance which comes from the higher self.

The danger is that you can (incorrectly) become convinced that a certain path, mindset or value belongs to you.

For those with an open G center, it’s essential to be mindful of your company. Spending too much time in the wrong place or around the wrong people can result in being very easily led into situations which are not correct for you.

The danger here is not that you are a sheep, but that you can become convinced a certain path, mindset or value belongs to you, when in reality it is somebody else’s and does not align with your authentic energy at all.

Re-establishing the necessary perspective to recognise such situations for what they are can become incredibly difficult and potentially painful.

Self-Projected Authority

This authority type has a powerful voice which can bring clarity.

G Center or Self-Projected authority applies to Projectors who have undefined Solar Plexus energy center, Sacral, Splenic, and Heart centers but a defined G center and Throat.

Self-Projected Projectors make up about 3% of the population. With their defined Throat being the energy hub of expression, this authority type has a powerful voice which can bring clarity.

Gates in the Identity G Center

The gates in the G center comprise of the following (listed clockwise):

Gate 1 – Gate of Self-Expression

Gate 13 – Gate of Listener

Gate 25 – Gate of the Spirit of the Self

Gate 46 – Gate of the Determination of the Self

Gate 2 – Gate of Higher Knowledge

Gate 15 – Gate of Extremes

Gate 10 – Gate of Bahavior of the Self

Gate 7 – Gate of the Role of the Self

Whether your Identity center is defined or undefined, it’s valuable to understand those gates which are activated.

Defined gates are where energy will flow and process most consistently. Familiarise yourself with the themes of their energy, and notice which centers they’re connected to via defined or undefined channels.

Ask yourself:

  • Are you consciously aware of the energy theme in your life?
  • How does it make you feel?
  • How can you nurture that energy in a positive way?

You can learn more in our post about gates and channels in Human Design.

What Does the Science Say?

As discussed in more depth in other posts, despite the fascinating theory behind Human Design, there’s no evidence that any aspect of the system holds any validity, neither holistically nor in terms of its various complex components.

Nonetheless, many people find comfort from all kinds of faith and spirituality, and there is value in that, as evidenced by a study conducted in 20201.
