Human Design Single & Split Definition & Relationships Dynamics

Learn about Human Design split definition, as well as single, triple, and quadruple. Discover how each kind influences your design, and what it means if you’re a Reflector with no definition in your chart.

What is Human Design Definition?

In the Human Design system, defined centers represent the areas of that were imprinted with energy at the time of birth. Definition relates to the configuration of each defined center and activated channel within a design.

Quick recap of centers…

They are the geometric shapes on a body graph which correspond to the Head, Ajna, Throat, G center, Heart, Spleen, Solar Plexus, Sacral center, and Root. Open and defined centers determine how life force energy functions in a design.

If you look at a Human Design bodygraph, you’ll quickly see that there is either a single network of defined channels and centers, or that they are split into separate areas.

For definition to exist in a center, there must be definition between two energy centers, ie. two defined gates creating a defined channel which connects two centers at either end. This definition creates the easy flow of information between centers, in a consistent way.

Rarely there can also be no definition (Reflectors).

One of the important things within the Human Design is understanding how definition affects individuals and their relationships. According to the system, some people are simply wired to function more autonomously than others, and this is apparent in how they relate to others.

Note: the first four gates in your chart make up your incarnation cross which, in combination with your profile, defines your life path purpose on earth.

How Many Definitions Are There in Human Design?

As mentioned above, definition can be a single circuit or split into parts; rarely there can also be none (though note Reflectors still have some defined gates in their design).

The different types of definition are know as:

  • No definition
  • Single definition
  • Split definition (which may be either simple or wide)
  • Triple split definition
  • Quadruple split definition

Each type determines the true nature of relationships for an individual, and the different ways their definition may influence them.

Relationships are one of the most difficult things in life to be ‘successful’ at. Human Design aims to provide a framework and mechanism for having and maintaining healthy partnerships.

Human Design Definition vs Circuitry

During your Human Design research, you may have heard the term ‘circuitry’ mentioned. So, what’s the different between that, and Human Design definition?

This is something that I personally found confusing to begin with, since both relate to the definition and wiring of gates and channels.

If you look carefully at a chart, you can quite clearly see the mechanics of how the defined centers are connected by activated gates and channels.

As with other elements of this complex framework, I want to try to clarify and simplify each important aspect of Human Design into easily digestible information so that you don’t have to search multiple sources to be able to understand each concept.

Definition refers to the appearance of the connections on a body graph. If you look carefully at a chart, you can quite clearly see the mechanics of how the defined centers are connected by activated gates and channels, or separated by openness.

On the other hand, circuitry relates to specific gates which are not work together to represent particular areas of life, and how definition within a circuit influences those areas.

Consistent energy flows through your defined channels and between your defined energy hubs.

In order to identify each one on a body graph, you’d need to know what you’re looking for, whereas with definition types it’s as simple as looking for those distinct areas.

What is Single Definition in Human Design?

Single definition, also known as single certainty, means that all of your defined centers and channels are connected in one continuous circuit and are always communicating. Consistent energy flows through your defined channels and between your defined energy hubs, giving you the trait of authenticity.

It’s said that those with single definition feel a sense of wholeness, or completeness in a natural way: you are independent and self-reliant.

There are two subcategories of split definitions, also known as double certainty:

  • Small / basic / simple split
  • Big / wide / broad split

Basic Split or Simple Split Definitions

A basic split refers to when it would take just one gate or channel to bridge a disconnection.

Wide Split or Broad Split Definitions

A wide split is easily detectable simply by looking at a human design chart, you will be able to see a clear separation between the two areas of definition.

Missing qualities can be identified by looking at the open gates in your chart.

Diagram showing wide split definition in Human Design.
Diagram showing wide split definition.

Both basic and wide split types are prone to feelings of inadequacy and emptiness if they do not consciously address what they feel is absent in their lives with a sense of true awareness.

These missing qualities can be identified by looking at the open gates in your chart and examining the specific meanings of each one.

Once you have actively worked on those elements in yourself, you are in a position to enter into a healthy relationship with another. In terms of the quality of that relationship, it will be superior after you’ve met your own needs.

Two Areas of Definition in a Body Graph

If you have split definition in your chart then you have separate areas of definition and are constantly drawn to others who have definition in the areas of their charts that is missing in your own.

Open bridging channels in a split definition chart represent areas vulnerable to conditioning.

Split definition types are said to be the people responsible for seeking and promoting monogamous pair bonding relationships – and the only definition that is designed to be in a relationship.

They are literally open to connection with others.

Their energy acts as a ‘bridge’ between the gaps in your chart, closing the disconnections between your energy centers.

It’s this innate need to find a way of closing the gaps between your defined centers that often manifests as the desire to find your ‘other half’: you will organically search out a partner with those different channels in their design to ‘bridge’ your openness.

Only beings on this planet who are equipped by design to be in a relationship are [simple or single] split definitions.

Ra Uru Hu

By the same token, the open bridging channels in a split definition chart also represent areas vulnerable to conditioning.

Split definition types are susceptible to fixating on the decision-making strategies of whatever traits are represented by the different energies of your open bridging channels. Naturally this is not correct for a split definition and can lead to manifestation of the false self theme.

When two bridging gates or a channel can close your split, you may focus your energy and attention on searching for a person who exhibits the qualities missing in your design. This creates the not self split definition, due to the enormous pressure in your relationships.

Its success is inevitable and is the blueprint for all human relationships.

Less commonly, when it takes more than a single channel to bridge your split, your focus can shift to what is missing being an inherent flaw in the world, preventing you from feeling ‘whole’.

Consciously embracing your own strategy and inner authority for making important decisions and entering into the right relationships is what enables you to enjoy a fulfilling life alongside another.

When you are in alignment with your type and this process is executed correctly, its success is inevitable and is the blueprint for all human beings in terms of healthy and monogamous, good quality relationships.

The split definition that’s correct is here to teach everyone else how to be in a partnership because they know what’s missing for them.

What is Triple Split Definition in Human Design?

Approx. 11% of people

Diagram showing triple split definition in Human Design.
Diagram showing triple split definition.

Triple-split definition, also known as triple certainty, refers to three disconnected areas in your design, and may involve two or often three of the awareness centers.

You can begin to feel suffocated if you are always bridged in the same way.

Though it may seem counterintuitive, triple-split people are complex beings who actually have more in common with single definitions than split definitions.

While split definitions seek out another to bridge their open channels and are comforted when they find their ‘other half’, a triple split does not experience the same solace in this situation.

You can begin to feel suffocated if you are always bridged in the same way with the same person, and therefore it’s critical for your wellbeing that you mix with multiple different auras on a daily basis. This need can be met simply by spending time in public places.

This doesn’t mean you do not enjoy being around your partner, only that your true self is not ‘completed’ by them in the same way that a split definition is. Your needs cannot be met by a single other person, and in your case, nor should they be – it’s simply not correct for your design.

What is Quadruple Split Definition in Human Design?

Approx. 1% of people

Diagram showing quadruple split definition in Human Design.
Diagram showing quadruple split definition.

Quadruple split definition, also known as quarterly certainty, means you have four different parts in your design which are defined but disconnected.

The only Definition that is, without question, Polygamists.

Ra Uru Hu

As a quadruple split you have a lot of definition in your chart, with little energy being taken in from the outside world, making you a very ‘fixed’ being. Since your defined centers are so separate, you require lots of freedom and time to process information.

Similarly to the basic split, quads are vulnerable to conditioning based on their bridging gates. However, unlike a simple split, you require more than one bridging source.

Learn more about conditioning and the process of deconditioning in Human Design.

You differ from a triple split in that being around multiple auras in public spaces to meet your bridging needs is not correct for you. You are far more comfortable forming close connections with two or three others who can between them bridge the gaps in your design.

No Definition

Appprox. 1% of people

These are rare types with no definition, also known as no certainty, in their design; their open centers makes them Reflectors who rely on the lunar cycle for their authority.

Reflectors are fluid beings who are not susceptible to being caught up in the fixed nature of those around them. Their aura is often described as having a ‘Teflon’ quality, in that they sample the auras of others, amplify and release their energy.

What Does the Science Say?

There’s no evidence to support the theory or principles of Human Design. However, some of the ideas introduced by the philosophy are fascinating, and there is undoubtedly some crossover with proven dynamics of the human condition.

Research shows, this is a universal in us all.

In the case of definition, much of the theory is based around relationships and how there are only certain people who are designed for monogamy. There’s also discussion about the idea that even those people are only ready to embrace a healthy relationship once they’re living in alignment with their aura type.

Let’s take a look at how these elements of Human Design may reflect psychological studies and/or hypotheses…

The Inclination to Seek Out Connection With Others

The various definition types described in this article suggests that certain groups of people are more inclined to seek out bonding experiences with others, in order to complement their own design.

Research shows, however, that this is a universal in us all1.

An Inherent Disinclination For Stable Relationships

Firstly, there’s a small amount of research linking the inclination to cheat on a partner with a particular gene2

While there’s no scientific basis for the concept of definition in Human Design being related to the way genetic imperative works, the idea that some people are more disposed to cheat is not new – and evidence supports the theory3.

The Importance of Resolving Emotional Baggage

Finally, let’s take a look at the concept of meeting your own needs before seeking another to complete you outlined for simple split definition.

Research shows that unresolved emotional baggage in relationships lower perceived partner value and challenge the relationship4

Arguably unsurprising, but it definitely seems that there’s a legitimate benefit to working on resolving one’s own issues, instead of looking to a partner to bridge the gap in one’s life, and/or before embarking on a new relationship.
