In the Human Design system, there are four or five personality types, depending on whether you count Manifesting Generators as their own type or lump them in with Generators. For the purposes of this post and because there are differences, we’re going to be looking specifically at Pure Generators.

What Are Pure Generators in Human Design?

As the dominant type, around 38% of the world’s population is made up of the Pure Generator Human Design type, (this number increases significantly if you include Manifesting Generators, a hybrid of Generator and Manifestor type).

You can actively work towards living in harmony with your strategy and authority, and ultimately experiencing a meaningful life.

Pure Generators have a defined Sacral energy center, but no connection to the Throat center. (Anyone with both the Sacral being a defined center and that direct connection to the Throat center – which gives the power of expression and initiation – are Manifesting Generators.)

A defined Sacral center means Generators have consistent access to abundant energy reserves.

Each ‘type’ has their own characteristics, and living in alignment with them (or not) will derive deep satisfaction in life (or not!). So it’s very worthwhile learning about your own personality type so you can actively work towards living in harmony with your strategy and authority, and ultimately experiencing a meaningful life.

Generator’s Role / Life Purpose

Ra Uru Hu, the founder of Human Design, said each type should exist in perfect symbiosis, mutually benefiting one another when responding to their inner wisdom and living in alignment with their true nature.

Characteristics of Generators in Human Design

These characteristics describe the power of the Generator who is operating and responding correctly to life opportunities.

• Energetic

Generators have an enormous energy reservoir. When responding correctly, they’re able to commit and see through even the most demanding projects, because they just keep on going.

The succession of our species is dependent on the fertile power of Sacral beings, and Generators’ glorious Sacral centers, being the center of sexuality, provide this powerful life-force energy.

• Productive

The apparent unending abundance of much energy within Generators leads to incredible productivity when responding correctly. Generators are often described as worker bees in Human Design, because of their strong work ethic and sustainable energy from their Sacral energy center.

• Passionate

Generators are deeply enthusiastic about projects that are meaningful to them, and they gain vast satisfaction and joy from committing to such activities. Pure Gens burn with passion when they fill their lives with the right work and people.

• Magnetic

Their great energy resources and enthusiastic commitment allows Generators to attract people and opportunities easily. Others are drawn to their irresistible zeal, and will organically seek access to their energy reserves.

An indicator that a Generator is operating correctly, is synchronicity.

• Mindfully present

Generators are designed to respond in the moment. 

When they learn to be in tune with their powerful Sacral motor, listen for its guttural ‘yes’ or ‘no’ at all times and deploy their Sacral energy correctly, then they can expect to experience true fulfilment.

• Successful

Generators living correctly often appear to be successful. Those who have learned to respond to cues from the world instead of initiating as we’ve been conditioned to do, will naturally and automatically bring more correct opportunities their way.

An indicator that a Generator is operating correctly, is synchronicity – when correct opportunities seem to magically occur at the same time, giving the impression the Generator is ‘lucky’.

It is all in the hands of the Generator.

What Does it Mean to Respond as a Generator?

Try not to think about the answers – simply respond.

In Human Design, we talk about responding in terms of the strategy and inner authority unique to each personality type. The correct response for each type is determined by which centers are open or defined.

Here’s what that means for Generators…

Human Design Generator Strategy

The strategy of Generators is to wait to respond. The key to perfecting the art and changing your entire life is through practice. This can be facilitated by asking yourself, or having someone you trust, ask you yes/no questions.

Try not to think about the answers – simply respond.

Listen intently to the sounds you’re making, especially if there’s a disconnect between the Sacral sounds and the physical words: if a yes comes out with a negative ‘uhn-un’ tone or a no comes out with a distinctly ‘uh-huh’ tone then pay close attention to that!

For many Generators with a defined Solar Plexus, the emotional wave they’re waiting to respond to is actually set in motion by the sound of the Sacral response – it initiates the firing process of their inner authority.

Human Design Generator Type Authority

Pure Generators can have Sacral, Splenic, or Emotional authority. 

It’s helpful to understand what that looks or feels like in practice.

When the Solar Plexus (Emotional center) is defined, Generators must honour the emotional clarity they gain over time, and ultimately be guided by this when it comes to making correct decisions.

The Spleen is the center for awareness; when you have a defined Splenic center, you have Splenic Generated Sacral authority, with intuition forming part of your authority. (Due to the hierarchy of authority, the Sacral supersedes the Spleen.)

We’ve talked about listening to our inner authority, but it’s helpful to understand what that looks or feels like in practice. These are some ways that Sacral and Splenic responses have been described:

Here are some ways you might notice the unmistakable response of your Sacral center:

• Especially for MG’s (defined Throat center), a literal ‘uh-huh’ (yep!) or ‘uhn-un’ noise (nope!);
• A burst of energy in your gut that physically draws you towards something (yep);
• A dull, heavy feeling in your gut (nope);
• A desire to make a positive ‘mmmmmm!’ sound in response to something (yep);
• A desire to groan a negative ‘ughhhh’ in response to something (nope);
• A lifting, expansive feeling in your belly (yep);
• A contracting knot of dread in your stomach (nope);
• A feeling of uncertainty in response to something (nope);

Here are some ways the Splenic response can manifest:

• Goosebumps,
• Tummy butterflies,
• The feeling of your tummy turning over, like going over a bridge in the car,
• An adrenaline dump that has your blood racing through your veins.

Generators vs Manifesting Generators

Now let’s examine Manifesting Generators vs Generators, and both how they are similar, and where they differ…

Similarities to Manifesting Generators

Generators have a defined Sacral center, the same as Manifesting Generators.

Attention to and discernment of your gut response mechanism is critical.

This means becoming attuned with your Sacral response, or gut feelings, is essential to your wellbeing and success. It’s essential that you respond to that intuition felt in the gut, rather than allowing your logical brain to lead you in making important decisions.

Many Generators also have Sacral authority, making your attention to and discernment of your gut response mechanism even more critical.

Differences to Manifesting Generators

Unlike Manifesting Generators, Pure Generators do not have the power of initiation. 

Unfortunately, societal conditioning tends to leave us all believing that initiating action is desirable, and therefore it’s a lesson Generators must actively work at, to unlearn and resist, through the process of deconditioning.

Many Generators really struggle with this, and it’s to their detriment! Attempting to Initiate is a common mistake Generators make, usually stemming from a fear that nothing will happen without their instigation.

However, when Generators have the courage to trust their Sacral energy, they will soon come to appreciate its incredible strength and the value of this different way of living.

The Not Self Theme of a Generator

For Generators, the False Self manifests as frustration as a result of incorrect energy usage, leading to dysfunction of that Sacral center. This tends to occur in the following scenarios:

• Attempting to initiate,
• Attempting to engage the Mind center,
• Committing to (or even becoming too involved with) people or projects that do not truly speak to them and bring them joy.

If they’ve not followed their strategy and inner authority to find that success, they will likely feel unfulfilled.

Generators can easily feel railroaded into projects by Manifestors or Projectors, and without being mindful of this and refusing to live on autopilot, this is a common theme. 

It’s vital that this scenario is avoided because once committed to a project, Generators are compelled to see it through to completion. Quitting is an alien concept to Generators, and to do so brings considerable inner turmoil.

Even when a Generator appears to be successful, if they’ve not followed their strategy and inner authority to find that success, they will likely feel unfulfilled.

The Most Effective Way For Generators to Sleep and Recharge

Generators should fully expend their Sacral energy to a pleasant state of exhaustion before going to bed. Depleting their energy reservoir before going to bed ensures that a single night’s sleep allows them to fully regenerate.

If a Generator goes to bed and remains restless, this is a sign that they are not fully spent, and they should consider adding more physical activities to their daily schedule.

Signature of Generators, Human Design

In Human Design, the signature of each type indicates being in alignment with your true self. 

The Generator’s signature is deep satisfaction, and for them, experiencing a deep sense of fulfillment at the end of each day demonstrate that they are following their strategy and inner authority.

Generators’ welcoming, magnetic auras are like a vortex.

If there is any gnawing feeling of discontent, frustration, or sense that they are not fulfilling their purpose, that’s an important signal that they are out of alignment with their Sacral energy and not on the correct path.

The Generator’s Aura

The mechanical functioning of a Generator’s auric truth is a welcoming, magnetic, open aura, like a vortex, drawing people and opportunities to them. 

This enveloping and embracing aura is both a blessing and a curse! 

If you’re a Generator then you may recognise that the depth of your openness creates your apparent good fortune when you’re living in alignment with your true nature. But, since your aura is so open, it also poses a risk of exploitation by other types.

The Generator’s only defence against this is using their strategy and inner authority.

Recommendations for Pure Generators

Following these guidelines will provide Generators the path to a meaningful and peaceful life.

• Recognising what projects or people are draining your life force energy whilst leaving you unfulfilled, and finding a way to wrap up those commitments so you can focus on other tasks more in alignment with the true nature of the Generator.
  
• Establishing firm boundaries – being led into the wrong projects without waiting to respond can leave Generators feeling intensely frustrated.
  
• Identifying areas of your life where you may have been conditioned (influenced) by society, and resisting in favour of pursuing your strategy and inner authority.

Following these guidelines will provide Generators the path to a meaningful and peaceful life.

What’s the Science Behind the Concept of Generators in Human Design?

There’s no evidence to suggest that Human Design has any scientific basis, however the philosophy explores some fascinating ideas.

The greatest emphasis behind this type within Human Design is on instinct (Sacral response, or gut feelings), and intuition (Splenic response, or inner knowing).

While the system of Human Design may not have a grounding in science and what can be proved, it’s true that there is a huge amount of value in paying close attention to our instincts. 

Intuition is real.

Intuition is not supernatural; while it may appear mystical, in fact it is steeped in biology and serves a very valuable purpose.

It transpires that the gut appears to have a brain of its own, and it’s even sometimes referred to as the second brain because this idea has merit!

Whether talking about being more decisive, without taking the time for analytical reasoning, or listening to our gut as a safety mechanism, this is an authentic process – and can even be measured!

The important takeaway here is that yes, intuition is real.

But also that everyone can benefit from it if they allow themselves to pay attention to the messages they receive from that apparently irrational – yet totally legitimate – ’sixth sense’.
