The profile lines in your Human Design chart offer insight to your personality. Each one brings a specific set of qualities and innate gifts to your own Design, teaching you more about your life purpose and incarnation cross.
Quick recap about the profile lines…
The 12 profiles are each made up of two of the six profile lines, which correspond to the six lines of the hexagram. They comprise of:
- 1st Line – The first line is the line of the Investigator
- 2nd Line – The second line is the line of the Hermit
- 3rd Line – The third line is the line of the Martyr
- 4th Line – The fourth line is the line of the Opportunist
- 5th Line – The fifth line is the line of the Heretic
- 6th Line – The sixth line is the line of the Role Model
Every human being has their own profile number which can be found by looking at the unique Design of your body graph.
Your conscious profile calculation is derived from the position of your personality sun / earth (conscious personality), and your unconscious design calculation is based on the position of your design sun / earth.
The essence of the third line indicates life experiences that could be described as ‘bad luck’: those with a 3rd line profile tend to be determined, yet often come unstuck in their pursuits.
However, this is very simplistic and it’s not all bad news!
Others are drawn effortlessly to you and you’re an excellent role model with a natural ability to lead and guide others.
The 5 line acts as a counter to the bad luck associated with the 3rd line of the Martyr. Despite the connotations of being a martyr, having the 5 line in your profile actually manifests as the opposite trait:
Regardless of what is going on in your life, you have a natural inclination towards a cheerful and optimistic disposition and a wicked sense of humour. When you’re correctly living your Design, this draws others to you effortlessly and you’re an excellent role model and natural leader.
Because the fifth line of the Heretic is expressed subconsciously in your profile, it cannot be interfered with. In other words, you’ll never be a real martyr, because your subconscious 5th line kicks in and dictates it’s simply not your true nature.
Different profile lines manifest in different ways depending on your aura type.
When we talk about profiles, the following three important things should be borne in mind:
- When looking at your Human Design profile lines, the first one is tied to consciousness, and the second to unconsciousness.
- They provide potentials for your life, not guarantees.
- They ultimately manifest in a different way depending on your aura type, and they should therefore be read in conjunction, as a unique way to navigate the world.
Let’s take a closer look at each line, and the 3/5 profile in context of your energy type.

The 3rd Profile Line – Martyr
According to the complex system developed by Ra Uru Hu, the conscious 3rd line in your profile means that experiencing your own mistakes is critical for you. This is the first thing you will recognise about the third line – personal experience of life trumps advice, always.
The Martyr line makes you restless, driving you to constantly challenge the status quo by searching out new experiences, projects, and adventures. Naturally these cannot always be successful ventures; unfortunately you also seem to have more than your fair share of bad luck.
However, you are resilient and actually thrive in making mistakes and learning from them.
You flourish in assimilating information and finding truth.
The 3/5 enjoys experimenting and when you’re living in alignment with your strategy and inner authority, making mistakes doesn’t faze you in the way it does most people. You understand that there’s no such thing as failure, only opportunities to learn and do better.
While you obviously prefer to win, when you do encounter bumps along the road of life you are very comfortable with pushing on in a new direction.
Essentially, you flourish in assimilating information and finding truth, and for you, that truth is discovered in the places others are too frightened to explore.
False Self in the 3/5 Martyr Heretic Profile
Of course, with the third line in your conscious sun, you’re vulnerable to the false self theme associated with the Martyr line.
Reluctance to make mistakes is projected onto you by others.
Maintaining a sense of cheerful optimism in the face of continuous mistakes can be a challenge for even the most robust person. Living your strategy and authority is what protects you from feeling disillusioned.
When you fail to live correctly according to your type, you put yourself at risk of taking on a negative quality of energy from others and becoming despondent. This can lead to you shunning your experimental nature which is so vital for your Design, ultimately manifesting as the not self theme.
Be aware that reluctance to make mistakes is projected onto you by other people; left to your own devices you are quite content with this endless cycle of trial and error as a method of learning.
Staying in alignment with strategy and authority is the only way to ensure you remain resilient enough to continue living your purpose.

The 5th Profile Line – Heretic
For anyone unsure, the (relevant) definition of heretic is:
A person holding an opinion at odds with what is generally accepted.
Oxford Languages
So how does this characteristic relate to the 5th profile line? Let’s take a look…
For the 3/5 profile, the fifth line of the Heretic means that one of the reasons for being so driven to experiment is for seeking out enlightenment, in any form that may take for you. As mentioned earlier, you flourish in finding truth – but the 5th line takes you a step further:
Not only do you seek truth and enlightenment, once you’ve found it you are compelled to share your knowledge by projecting your insight to those around you. This is where the term ‘Heretic’ originates from.
When living in alignment with their type, the 3/5 profile is highly persuasive.
Your ultimate purpose for sharing your epiphanies is noble – to drive positive change in the rest of the world; this can often mean changing the behavior of others. But, naturally, that’s no easy feat.
Often, your leadership is better received by strangers than those closer to you.
For people to buy into your enlightenment and be prepared to make the changes you propose, they must invite your projected wisdom. If they do not, this process fails and that can make the the 3/5 profile feel snubbed and rejected.
When living in alignment with their type, the 3/5 profile individual is highly persuasive. Otherwise, they can be susceptible to feeling the pressure of others to abandon their plans.
Your unique profile should only be considered alongside your Human Design type.
Ultimately, the strength of the 5th line person will continue to drive the Martyr Heretic to fulfil his ambitions for creating positive change.
Aura Type in Profile 3/5
There are many components to the Human Design journey, with profiles being an important one – but it’s necessary to first have a solid foundation of knowledge about the system, and especially your aura type.
Learning about your profile is valuable in your unique journey, however it is not helpful by itself and should only be considered alongside your Human Design type. This is because the qualities of each profile manifest differently according to individual designs, and in particular energy types.

Let’s take a closer look…
3/5 Manifestor Profile in Human Design
Manifestors have the unique gift and natural talent of initiating. They are autonomous, self-reliant, and fiercely independent by nature, and when they formulate a plan they are inclined to execute it immediately.
It’s important to follow the Manifestor’s genetic strategy.
In the context of the Martyr Heretic profile, these traits can be beneficial since a Manifestor is unlikely to be negatively affected by others’ opinions or disapproval.
However, as we know, while Manifestors may not be concerned by the objection of others, the resistance and challenges it may present for their plans can become infuriating. Therefore, it’s necessary to follow the Manifestor’s genetic strategy: inform those around you of your intentions and your whole life will become easier.
3/5 Generator Profile in Human Design
Pure Generators have a defined Sacral center, providing the gift of a powerful Sacral response which helps to steer them on the correct path in life.
Following your strategy and authority will make your mistakes feel rewarding.
Before taking any action, Generators must listen for the inner voice of their Sacral, which sounds like an ‘uh-huh’ (yes), or ‘nuh-uh’ (no) coming from the gut.
For the Martyr – Heretic (3/5) Generator, following your Sacral response will help guide you to take the right actions.
Thanks to the third line in your profile, even this will not save you from making mistakes – but it will at least ensure that any you do make provide you with valuable insight and wisdom. Following your strategy and authority will make your mistakes feel rewarding.
3/5 Manifesting Generator Profile in Human Design
MG’s have traits of both Manifestors and Generators, though they are always more closely related to the Generator.
In Manifesting Generator’s with a 3/5 profile, their third line can draw them towards their Manifestor desire for initiating action. This is not correct for this type – it is vital for them that they should instead be more cautious and place more emphasis on paying attention to their Sacral response.
This is likely to always be a slippery slope, with the third line and Manifestor tendencies in their design drawing them to initiate new ideas, like a moth to a flame.
3/5 Projector Profile in Human Design
The Martyr Heretic is one of the more difficult profiles for the Projector – it’s an unfortunate combination, with each element fighting the other.
3/5 Projectors will often feel in turmoil.
People with this Design will commonly feel compelled by the lines in their profile to seek out others in their local community to influence them – and this quality goes squarely against the Projector strategy to wait for an invitation.
Projectors may be open to the influence of others, often moulding themselves to people’s projections and expectations. Taking alone time away from the outside world and focusing on their own needs and desires is the best way to manage this vulnerability.
3/5 Projectors with emotional authority are emotional beings who will often feel in turmoil, but ultimately it’s critical for them to overcome the call of their profile and continue to follow their strategy. This will ultimately help them to pursue the right invitations.
3/5 Reflector Profile in Human Design
Reflectors have the unique gift of lunar authority, waiting to make decisions until a full lunar cycle has passed. They are a fluid type, sampling the life force energy of those around them, and trying on different masks and roles.
This experience is correct if they can simply embrace the process.
Reflectors commonly sense that they are different from others, spending their lives trying to find their place in the world. They may try to emulate those they respect before ultimately coming to accept that their mask doesn’t quite ‘fit’.

For a 3/5 Reflector, however, this experience is correct if they can simply embrace the process: it allows them to acquire the incredible wisdom and unique perspective of each different role they embody.
Career Path for Profile 3/5 in Human Design
Any job that offers opportunities to seek out more efficient processes through trial and error will appeal to the third line of the Martyr, while a teaching position will satisfy the fifth lines.
Specific roles combining the two are perfect for this profile type, allowing them to thrive at their highest expression.
3/5 Human Design Compatibility

What Does the Science Say?
As we’ve previously established, there’s no evidence to support the theory of Human Design.
However there are many fascinating concepts within the system – some with solid foundations in the context of psychology. At the bottom of all of my Human Design articles I attempt to deconstruct the specific component discussed in the post, and see where there may be some common features with accredited research.
There are enough similar characteristics to draw a comparison.
In terms of individual profiles, I thought it would be interesting to see whether there’s any overlap with any Myers-Briggs personality types. Bear in mind there are 12 different profiles in Human Design and 16 identified by the Myers-Briggs personality test1.
In the case of 3/5 Martyr-Heretics, there is one Myers-Briggs personality type that stands out as being similar:
ESTP, the Persuader.
Gregarious, influential, and persuasive, this type may not be an exact match, but there are definitely enough similar characteristics to draw a comparison with the 3/5.
You can read more about this type here.

I am a 3/5 and my Myers Briggs type is INFJ
Hi Andrea,
Which do you feel is most accurate for you?
I’m a 3/5 and an INFP.
I’m a 3/5 and also an INFP 🙂
I’m 3/5 and also INFJ MTBI 🙂
How Funny… I am a 3/5 (Emotional Projector) as well as INFJ and while reading this I was just thinking that what I really need in life is a friend just like me!
Well hi there fellow Emotional Projector and INFJ (I’m 2/4)! It’s great to have you here and e-meet you.
Kate
I am a 3/5 and also a INFJ.
Wow that’s interesting! I’m a 3/5 emotional manifesting generator and an ENFP 💗
Me too!!!😄
Oh my god, we are the same…
I am also an infj and a 3/5.
Well since we are sharing… Im 3/5 Manifestor – ESTJ – Enneagram 8w7
All profiles in each system nail me to the core. Never really had bad luck per-say, but maybe i don’t think of myself as unlucky when i fail at something. When things don’t work out as planned it energizes me to push harder for what will eventually workout as a success. Not sure what trait causes that differential in perspective, but It works in my universe. I always am constantly using what doesn’t work to improve and refine. Im a stickler for precision. In fact, if it ain’t perfect, its not complete
Hi, Kate. May I ask if you could explain more about martyr line having bad luck? Were they born with it? And if so, isn’t living pointless if one is always beset bad luck and can’t do anything about it?
Thank you.
Hi,
I understand your frustrations with the idea that the 3/5 profile equates to bad luck for life. I’ve tried to cover everything thoroughly from the Human Design perspective, but you will note the end section of my post also covers a different approach.
In terms of the Human Design system, my understanding is that living your strategy and authority will ultimately lead to fulfilment as wisdom is gained through making and learning from mistakes.
My personal opinion is that much of this is open to interpretation, and if something doesn’t sit right with you, exploring other ideas might be useful.
Thanks for reading and commenting, and I wish you the very best.
Kate
No, they are not born with bad luck, it’s more about trial and error that brings wisdom.
Are you saying this from personal experience you aren’t happy about?
I too just feel despondent with this whole no luck, no matter what. If the projector is designed in a way to achieve success to feel fulfilment, then how can we succeed if we always at odds with our own selves 3/5 and it just seems to be getting worse the older I get and the more I try 🙁
I understand that you put at the end to find other approaches etc, but if you are born with a blue print how do you overcome that , it just feels like the short end of the stick and I can’t find a way to accept my 3/5 at all anymore . No matter what group I try and be part of or sit with , I’m always on the outsider or cast out.
Hi Nadine,
My response may not be quite what you’re looking for, however…
This blog is probably quite unlike any others about Human Design. I find concept utterly fascinating, but I’m not a diehard believer. I write about the theory and explain the system, but I will not push the philosophy as being the only possible truth.
Human Design is one of many practices of spirituality – and spirituality is supposed to enhance our lives. My personal view is that if something doesn’t feel good, then that’s a sign to explore other possibilities.
The reason I compare with Myers-Briggs personality types is because that test is based on Carl Jung’s research into personality (although it also has its limitations!). Perhaps you’d benefit from taking the test (it’s free!) if you haven’t already, and learning more about your personality type. You may find that to be a better fit in terms of what you’re looking for?
Whatever you decide, I wish you the very best,
Kate
Hi Kate, also in response to Nadine… I certainly do not feel that the ‘bad luck’ is set as blueprint and possibly has more to do with parts of self that are in balance versus out of balance. I have been accused of being born with a golden horse shoe (you know where) throughout my life as I have been a pretty lucky girl in the world. Through exploring my Human Design, I realize now, this good fortune could be a “3/5” aspect of my life-long quest for new adventures and experiences that have resulted in confidence, certainty and security acquired through these experiences and learning one can do no wrong in life. Now, if I only I could tell someone all about it…says, the Emotional Projector in me ; )
i’d like you to tell me all about it !

3/5 Emo Projector chiming in here. I’ve realised that much of the struggle, pain, and confusion I once used to feel came from all the fear-based projections of others (family, friends, peers, teachers etc) that I’d unconsciously absorbed over decades. For a time I’d forgotten my natural positivity, resilience, and will which so perfectly complement the 3/5 line.
Now I remember how much I adore – need even! – and am divinely equipped for evolutionary adventure, trailblazing and discovery.
We 3/5s dare to see, go, and experience things that likely terrifies a majority of humanity, and that’s how it’s designed to be. Visionary leaders inspire and initiate the birthing of expanded and unmanifested possibilities for the collective. And it takes receptive minds willing and ready to embrace evolution (with its inevitable uncertain + discomfort) to recognise and invite in the invaluable projected 3/5 field to share their experiential, experimental, and mutative wisdom.
So, to all 3/5s out there, especially Projectors, I say: learn to love your unique design; trust that your journey of remembrance is bring you back home to peace, joy, and success in simply BEING the inspiration and vision that YOU are. In your aligned beingness, you shine your true light, and are then recognised. With your inherent wisdom, you also get to discern which of the stellar invitations you’ve received are correct for you. This way, you walk through the right open doors that lead to broadcasting the mutative impact you’re designed to be.
3/5s, love + trust your experiences – utterly!
In Solidarity, Chinye
I just learned about human design today, I had no idea this kind of thing existed! I am a 3/5 pure generator it does resonate with me but I am also an INTP female, which is quite rare. I am a scientist by profession and very analytical which is inline with INTP but it seems not at all with 3/5 generators, am I interpreting this wrong? Thanks!
I am a 3/5 Emotional Manifestor and an INFJ.
As a 3/5 manifesting generator, I’d say, forget about ‘group’ as a factor at all. Try to connect with particular individuals at the personal level. Choose person, who feels like most interesting for you at the moment. Express yourself immediately. For me, it became much more easier after I accepted that relation to any group means almost nothing in case of a quality of social interactions with people I like. And it’s very easy to pick someone’s interest just by being open minded and sincere.
I am a 3/5 and also a INFJ.

HD confronts my desire to take all the BS projected onto me and self inflicted trauma from the not self and ball it up into a Epic Read, but I want to be 1000% undoxable first! This deep Science gives me hope to keep writing. The idea I look good on paper if I use these tools lifts my spirit with forward momentum. Everything around me confirms divine alignment, even in the face of this utterly sick socio-economic construct. Nice to see so many INFJs in here because I took the Brigg-Myers soo many times!
You have Al Capone on both 3/5 profile as well as 2/4.
Thanks so much for making me aware of this error! I’ve removed him from the 2/4 post which was incorrect – he’s a 3/5.
